Which Stainless Steel Grade can be Used in High Temperature?

Stainless steels are widely used in several industries because they can withstand temperatures up to 1150°C. They offer superior performance in several high-temperature applications because of their durability and allowing elements.

Austenitic steels have high-temperature applications

Austenitic steels are used in high-temperature environments where the temperature can be more than 550 degrees Celsius. Some of the typical applications of stainless autistic grades are as follows

  • Cement industry
  • Energy conversion plants
  • Engineering industry

Stainless ferritic grades

Stainless ferritic grades 4724 and 4713 are used in high-temperature applications where the temperature can range between 550°C to 850°C. Ferritic stainless steel grades have an alloying element known as chromium, increasing its corrosion resistance. Higher steel grades 4736, 4762, and 4740 are mostly used in environments where temperatures can exceed up to1150°C. These grades offer great resistance against molten metals and lower sulfuric attacks. Ferritic steels have a ferritic structure, making them resistant to more thermal shock than austenitic stainless steels. In environments where high-temperature applications are required, ferric stainless grades are used, and they have the following applications:

  • Furnace technology installations within metal working and power and chemical industry
  • Installations within metalworking, power, and chemical industries

1. Grade 304
304 stainless steel is highly corrosion-resistant as it contains nickel and chromium. Therefore, it is used in several applications, such as steel fasteners, piping, Heat exchangers, food processing equipment, etc.   Intermittent 870°C Continuous 925°C  

2. Grade 309
309 stainless steel is also resistant to pollution and can withstand high temperatures. As a result, it is used in several industries.   Intermittent: 980°C Continuous: 1,095°C

3. Grade 310
310 stainless steel is applied in industries for manufacturing heat treatment baskets, heat exchangers, burner tapes Steel tubes   Intermittent. 1,025°C Continuous: 1,150°C

4. Grade 410
410 stainless steel is highly corrosion resistant and comes with great tensile strength.   Intermittent: 815°C Continuous: 705°C

5. Grade 420
420 stainless steel includes commendable ductility and corrosion-resistant properties. They are used to manufacture medical equipment, cutlery, shear blades, needle valves, etc.   Intermittent: 735°C Continuous: 620°C

6. Grade 321
321 stainless steel is resistant to temperature and is used in hot environments. They are used to manufacture Seamless Tubes, furnace parts, aircraft exhausts, Seamless Pipes, etc.
