Austenitic SS 316 Round Bar

Austenitic SS 316 Round Bar

The molybdenum content gives 316 stainless round bar or UNS S31600 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Stainless Steel 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

Stainless Steel 316 Bar is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel developed to provide improved corrosion resistance to Alloy 304 / 304L in moderately corrosive environments. SS 316L Stainless Steel sheets and plates is more corrosion resistant than 316 stainless steel round bar and any other related common alloys.

Properties

Alloy 316/316L bars have good corrosion resistance to pitting in phosphoric and acetic acid solution. It performs well in boiling 20% phosphoric acid. The alloy can also be used in the food and pharmaceutical process industries where it is utilized to handle hot organic and fatty acids in an effort to minimize product contamination.

SS 316L, the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel, is immune to grain boundary carbide precipitation (sensitisation). This makes it suited to use in heavy gauge (over about 6mm) welded components. For elevated temperature applications the high carbon variant, 316H stainless steel and the stabilised grade 316Ti stainless steel should be employed.

Stainless Steel 316 bar is widely used in environments where sulphur dioxide gas is present at high temperatures. The alloy does not perform in reducing, nitriding or carburizing atmospheres, but it does outperform most heat resistant stainless steels in these conditions.

Specification

The Specification for Wrought Stainless steel Bars and 316 stainless steel round bar sizes as per astm Standard is ASTM A276/ASME SA-276, they are categorised into different form and shape such as SS 316/L/H Round Bar, Rod, Channel Bar, T-Bar, Flat Bar, Blocks, Square, bar, Triangle, Threaded, Hex (A/F), Profiles, Half Ingot, Billet, I/H Bar, etc. and available at major 316 stainless steel round bar suppliers like Shalco.

When considering wrought stainless round bars or 316 stainless steel half round bar, material shall be furnished in the following way such as  Hot-worked, Hot-worked and Annealed, Hot-worked- Annealed and cold worked or Hot-worked-Annealed and heat treated.

Round bars depending upon their treatment and their use and application they can also be available in different surface finishes such as Black, Bright Polished, Rough Turned, NO.4 Finish, Matt Finish, BA Finish, 2B, 2D, etc. The 316 stainless steel round bar price varies depending upon different finishes.

Applications

Stainless Steel 316 SS Bar offers a wide range of applications. High Chromium with additions of Molybdenum can be used for this Stainless Steel 316 in quite aggressive conditions such as sea water. Stainless Steel 316 are also chosen for their resistance to stress corrosion cracking, which are further not as formable as austenitic stainless steels.

Stainless Steel 316 is often used in biomedical implants, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, textile finishing, food processing, photographic, marine exterior trim, Pulp & Paper Industry, Aerospace Industry, Oil and Gas Industry etc.
