Copper-nickel 70/30 with controlled quantities such as iron and manganese make copper nickel
70/30 pipes and tubes resistant to general corrosion and stress cracking. Along with these,
copper-nickel 70/30 pipes are also stronger against erosion and impingement due to turbulent
water containing air bubbles and silt flowing at high velocities.

Copper-nickel 70/30 pipes and tubes are cost-effective when compared to other
grade materials. CuNi 70/30 pipes and tubes have high ductility, excellent drawing, forming,
and spinning characteristics, and also got good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Production Process

Grade Cu-Ni 70/30 pipes and tubes are also known as UNS C71500 are manufactured such as
ERW (Electric Resistance Welded), Seamless and EFW (Electric Fusion Welding) with different
forms such as round, square, rectangle, etc. with the specific end as a plain end, bevel end and
threaded end with a nominal thickness of various schedule ranging from SCH 5 to SCH XXS.

The process through which copper nickel 70/30 pipes and tubes can be manufactured with
processes like cold pilgering, extrusion process, tube mill process, and piercing process followed
by heat treatment and mechanical testing.

Properties

Copper Nickel 70/30 pipes and tubes also have extra-ordinary low-temperature properties and
respond well to hardening due to cold working. Because of these properties, these Cu-Ni 70/30
pipes and tubes can be utilized in the “as welded” condition, even in highly corrosive
environments.

Copper Nickel 70/30 pipes and tubes have got high oxidation resistance and resistance to
stress corrosion cracking. These alloys are thermally stable and have normal strength even
when the temperature is high.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Alloy 70/30 responds well to almost every fabrication process and is readily hot and cold
worked. It is also easily joined by various welding methods like soldering and brazing. With
good hot and cold formability and malleability approaching that of copper 70/30 does not
harden instantly, resulting in the material drawing and spin.

Cu-Ni 70/30 or UNS C71500 can be annealed at a temperature between 649°C and 816°C
(1200°F and 1500°F). In the annealed condition, 70/30 provides moderate strength levels which
make it an ideal material to be used in more demanding applications. Copper-nickel alloys also
have good fabricability and are inherently resistant to biofouling.

Applications

Copper nickel 70/30 pipes and tubes or UNS C71500 alloy have the greatest applications in
areas where high temperatures and pressures are combined. Along with this, copper nickel
70/30 is useful in conditions with high velocity and destructive turbulence and is widely used in
industries like oil and gas, wastewater, chemical processing, marine and food processing.
